What is this course about?

People who speak more than one language often have an advantage when it comes to getting a role with a global organization or study at a university overseas. It is important to be able to describe exactly how much language proficiency they have. In simple terms, proficiency is what a person can and can’t do in another language. The triad of accuracy, complexity and fluency make up proficiency.

In this course we will first explain how learners and teachers know when it is appropriate to use an external proficiency test, like IELTS. We will then look at ways learners can self-assess, using recognised guidelines. Teachers working outside of a curriculum can also informally assess their learners using these guidelines. During this course, you will see how Sofia and Larry, our language learners, assess their proficiency. You will also see how our language teachers, Abdul and Edith, help their students.
